Spiders Morning Jolt 9/22: Breaking Stony

Today, we're looking at how the Spiders took down Stony Brook for their second win of the season.

Good morning. And just like that, football is 1-0 in conference play. It was a tight game that was decided at the last minute, but the Spiders came out on top. Now, let’s keep this win streak going.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Stony Broken. The Spiders won their first CAA game and away game this past weekend against Stony Brook with a close 20-19 final score. The game started off with field goals coming from each team. We scored the first touchdown with a 56-yard pass from Jackson Hardy to Nick DeGennaro. The Spiders took the lead in the third when Savon Smith ran 36 yards to the end zone. Stony Brook took the lead in the fourth after a field goal and interception, but Matthew Traynor blocked the extra point field goal and the Spiders took the victory in the last 46 seconds when Andrew Lopez made a 28-yard field goal. 🏈 Read more about the win here.

🔼 Senior Slay. The women put up a W at their senior day game against Saint Louis. The Spiders celebrated seven seniors who are graduating in May 2024 and also won 5-2, with three seniors scoring. The first two goals were scored by juniors Annie Nash and Stevie Drum. The final three were scored by seniors Olivia De Cain, Alexandria Lavelle, and Cori Nichols. Overall, the Spiders had 27 shots and 19 shots on goal, whereas SLU only had six shots and four shots on goal. The next game will be against Lock Haven on Friday at home.

Best Stats. Let’s take a look at the stats from football’s win over Stony Brook. The Spiders led with 18 first downs and 195 rushing yards but fell in passing with 112 yards to SBU’s 154 yards. Overall, though, the Spiders had the most total offensive yards.

Fresh Plays. The Spider freshmen are showing off their skills at practice. Collin Tanner took it up to the rim, and Ryan Soulis followed it up. Tanner is a 6’6” guard from North Carolina, and Soulis is a 6’10” forward from Athens, Greece. You can see the duo and the rest of the team at their first game of the season on Nov. 6.
