Spiders Morning Jolt 9/18: M&W Tennis Season Openers

The men's and women's tennis teams dominated in their season openers.

Good morning. Two big reasons to come out to the women’s tennis match this weekend: to cheer on the Spiders and to celebrate the extraordinary life of longtime coach Mark Wesselink.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Domination. The men’s tennis team took on the UNCG Hidden Dual and claimed several victories. Doubles duos Cole Brashear and Davis Wiley and Sam Rathmanner and Paxton Pritchard beat Coastal Carolina and NCWU. Otto Sewell and Grant Cohen along with Dylan Atkinson and Zach Portnoy also beat NCWU in doubles competition. The men went 4-1 against Campbell in singles and 6-2 against North Carolina Central in singles. 🎾 See the scores here.

Last week, the Spiders shut out Charleston Southern 38-0. This is the program’s first shutout win since beating Davidson 41-0 in 2022. Kyle Wickersham led the Spiders to score each quarter. He punched in a one-yard touchdown and threw his first passing touchdown of the season. Wickersham went 10-12 on the day, throwing for 128 yards.

First x2. The women’s tennis team competed at the ITA Hall of Fame Classic and had first-place finishes in the doubles and singles draws. Elizabeth Novak earned a first-place finish in the White Singles Draw. Novak and Lara Bakhaya won the Colonial Doubles Draw. 🎾 Here are the other results.
